“From The Field Notes & Archives” came to me at a time of social and political unrest, when communities and families are being ripped apart due to a fear of diversity and a shameful exoticism. In this video I am making visual and linguistic connections between the anguish and anxiety around belonging, identity, and social hierarchies happening on a socio-political level as well as within the environmental spectrum of today.
The script evokes the sensation of getting picked and taken, from the perspective of the flower, or plant. It questions the need for it’s selection “is it because I am exotic?”
The footage in this experimental film come from an iphone, bender 3D animations, usb micriscope footage in the COLO Herbarium of cheatgrass, and slide film from the Hausknecht Herbarium. I took the information on the specimen label of the cheatgrass in the COLO herbarium and used it as a prompt for AI to generate a 3D model of the place where the specimen was collected.
The narrative poem written throughout the film puts the viewer in the perspective of a flower being picked to be studied, and also alludes to questions I have about what will happen to our imagery of and access to nature once it is totally destroyed.
