Group Exhibition View from the garage at the Red Door Arts & More Store, Hygiene, CO. June 2026.

C U at the Red Door is a community-focused exhibition and project that took place in June 2026 at the Red Door Arts & More Store in Hygiene, CO.

I would go to the Red Door Arts & More Store to buy local spa goods. They carry a goat milk lotion that I am obsessed with. One day in February I was driving through Hygiene and picked up some lotion and got to chatting with one of the owners, Elaine. She was telling me how the store is moving across the street to a one-storey ranch-style home, with three bedrooms and a lot more space than their current store would be available to artists to exhibit their work to sell. She was asking if I would happen to know artists. “Well, I am one!” I chuckled. Immediately my lightbulbs were going off with the idea to do a pop-up exhibit in the old, smaller store once they moved out. But Elaine had a different idea. She mentioned their new store will have a garage space that they currently don’t know what to do with. After a few minutes of discussion, I recognized the need this town had for more artists and workshops. We decided that the opening of this new store location will be a great time to engage the community and bring whatever skills and artworks I could offer to the community of Hygiene. The rest evolved into a very organic and organized exchange of art and art making processes that will change the way that garage is thought of forever.

I quickly assembled a team of artists and creatives who I work with and know through CU Boulder’s MFA, Cinema, and Atlas PhD programs. Within a few months time I organized a team and we scheduled workshops that would be available on weekends throughout the entire month of June in 2026 and together we cleaned out the garage and set up this group exhibition.

There was no overarching theme of the exhibition except for the fact that it was in a garage. I used the architecture and contents of the garage to help design and curate the structure of the show: using filing cabinets, peg board, and shelving that was already there. Thinking of scale and how viewers may move around the space, we worked together to situate all of the artworks in the non-traditional gallery space.

With each artist bringing their own skillset and practice into this space outside of CU Boulder campus and into the outskirts of rural Boulder County, we were able to offer an array of workshops on the weekends such as:

    Cyanotype
    Button Making
    Magic Lantern Slides
    Community Quilting
    Sip & Paint
    Poetry Readings
    Pottery
    and more

What evolved was a growing community and bridges being built between the unincorporated town and the young artists emerging from Boulder.

Thank you so much to Chet & Elaine from the Red Door Arts & More Store for trusting me with a vision centered around community and artistic practice!
Thanks to all who came to visit and partake in the workshops from all the spanning communities!
