Each rug is finished with PVC or latex glue and backing fabric.These tufted works are designed and inspired by Google Earth screen shots of the deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, mostly which is illegally happening on Indigenous lands in Brazil. Each tufted rug is sold with a QR code that will take you to the Google Earth satelite view of the coordinates the tufted shape is referencing. Like an archive, the tufted pieces solidify a moment in time of environmental destruction. Weeks, months, and years later, one can scan the QR code to visit the Google Earth satelite view and observe the transformations taken place in that location due to the continual destruction on the environment. Some of the tufted works were made before I began the coodinates archive, therefore some QR codes will bring you to an animation I created using the original Google Earth screen grab. This ongoing project is made with the financial support from the 2022 three month Project Stipend&nbsp; from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony (KdfS), The Kunstfonds Neustart Project Stipend, and the three month project stipends from the Kulturamt Leipzig in 2022. and Mix Media 2022-2024 These newer works have been produced mainly as part of artistic research into botanical studies, herbarium work, and connections between depictions and symbolism of plants. These works are all inspired by time spent in the Hausknecht Herbarium. The compositions and depictions of plant studies are composed by drawing and tracing studies of old slide film found in the archives of the University of Jena. Exploring photography compositions and placements of non-human specimens within a frame, these tufted works and wooden works are layered exploration into botanical photography translated into textile and fragmented forms. The titles of the works coorelate to the titles of the cartridges and files the slide photographs were archived under. All of the wool used is fire proof, water proof, and moth proof, can be used as carpets or wall hangings, or sofa covers.&nbsp; <img width="1017" height="1500" width_o="1017" height_o="1500" reimagining whose stories, ideas, and artwork show up in professional museum exhibits. For the past two years, youth from across Denver worked with professional artists, community members, researchers, educators, and museum experts to develop this art exhibit. This book documents their experiences, artist statements, and ideas about how to make the world a better, more creative and joyful place. The exhibition features youth from Museo's Lxs Jóvenes Leadership Lab and professional creatives in a powerful artistic conversation. Our research asks how youth can be invited to collaborate with elders to tell stories of their experiences and identities in public spaces. Throughout the project, artists and educators invited the teens to explore: Who is a museum for? Whose stories does it tell? What stories would you share? Youth answered through artwork, displayed here alongside that of the professional artists as equally valid expressios of identity, justice, tradition, and play. My roles within this project started in 2024 as a facilitator for workshops on collage and using creative processes to (re)tell stories around identity and culture. Working with the project director, Kristina Stamatis, was an amazing experience and we quickly recognized our shared values around intergenerational education and creative practice. As curator and coordinator, I pieced together the sketches and works the youth created and continued to plan new prompts and workshops that would contribute to the overall themes incited by the youth: identity, justice, tradition, and play. The works range from: collages, embroideries, drawings, ceramics, graffiti stencils, zines, and paper flowers. In the Fall of 2025, Kristina and myself designed the Lxs Jovenes Youth Leadership Program to be about curation and giving the youth agency on decision making and editing for the exhibition. In this time, I was also preparing a lot of the artworks to be exhibition ready. Youth helped with curatorial design decisions, color themes, text and had a voice on which artworks should be included or not. &nbsp;The final result of the work from the youth in collaboratino with myself along with othe professional artists and adults in the area is the exhibition Nuestras Historias, on view from January 29 - May 17, 2026. last few years I have actively listening to music intentionally. I would put on some headphones, lay or sit somewhere comfortable, close my eyes and dive into different playlists and radios to collect sounds and songs I thought were really moving for one reason or another. These collections turned into random playlists. In times of polarization and isolation, I find music to be something universal all humans can relate to and connect with. Simultaneously, since around 2019 I have been collecting random creaigslist Missed Connections ads. I was living in Germany at the time and I think it was a way to cope with homesickness and looking for belonging in a foreign country. Since moving back to the USA, I have continued this collecting practice. I have had this idea for a radio show for about two years now, but I am honestly not conventionally able to schedule or work in a radio station, I don’t have the skills, I don’t have the regular routine, nor do I have the energy to do so, quite honestly. Still, this urge to combine the missed connections with my playlists has pulled at my studio practice to the point that I began recording it myself as an experiment. Below you can see an expisode as an example and you are welcome to click on the Mix Cloud link to hear more episodes.I think there is something pulsing at the underbelly of contemporary society when I look through these ads: the hopelessness of the ad most people convey in their posts, the longing for connection which inspired one to post on craigslist, the dying use of these sorts of ads, and the ever growing diagnosis of depression and “lonliness epidemics”. These vignetes of sound and text are just a mere reflection on these times and a creative way to explore those emotions and navigate these attempts to connect. &nbsp; I use a very cheap recorder or my laptop microphone, the DIY quality is simply true to the equipment I (don’t) have and the fact that I am mostly recording these while I am wide awake due to insomnia. There, I spent two days in the archives of the Hausknecht Herbarium and generated a series of drawings and tracings from color slide film photographs. The photographs were from botanical research and science groups that traveled around the world between 1960-1990 to look at different flora. Since that residency, I have moved to Boulder, Colorado and have visited other herbaria, such as the one on the CU Boulder Campus. Continuing my interest in the depiction of plants and the cultural role of plants in time of environmental crisis, I created new artworks using acrylic, wool, 3D animation, and video. &nbsp; In the 16:27:57 +0000 Andrea Garcia Vasquez https://andreagarciavasquez.com/Shapes-of-Silence Shapes of Silence2025 Augmented Reality Intervention Central Park, Boulder, CO Through a smartphone or tablet, visitors scan a QR code and witness digital interventions layered within Central Park, Boulder. Animated objects and text appear to be moving, bounding, growing or shrinking between the fields, trees, creek, and rocks—each shape referencing results from community workshops I led in collaboration with BMoCA and the Carnegie Library. This project responds to Archivist, Nicole Docimo’s, work with Archival Silences at the Carnegie. Silences in the archive are often the result of negligence, systemic bias, or deliberate erasure. I became curious: what shape does silence take, make, fill in, or drain? I held three workshops between March and April 2025: one with Jeanne Quinn’s Ceramics Seminar and two at BMoCA, where I asked participants to reflect on silencing, being silenced, and silence. Different drawing prompts&nbsp; guided participants to reflect in different ways on how one approaches silence, experience silence, or inflicts silence. The goal of each workshop was to visually explore the expression of something that is missing. How can a negated essence, the lack of noise, the lack of voice be represented? The shapes drawn from participants became the raw data for the AR work. Using AI tools, I translated the drawings into digital 3 dimensional .obj files, I generated textures or colors for each object, and animated them using blender. Once rigged and animated, the objects are placed in the geolocation of Boulder’s Central Park using Adobe’s Aero Software. With that software I am able to set different types of triggers allow for AR viewers to interact with each object. When experiencing the AR, viewers look through the camera of their smart device as animated objects appear and allow for the viewer to walk around it, investigate it deeper, tap to trigger animations, enter or exit proximity to trigger objects appearing or disappearing, and more. &nbsp; Shapes of Silence is not only a virtual intervention—it’s an act of collective imagining. In resisting erasure, it reclaims space through collaborative storytelling and speculative imagery.Special thanks to Jeanne Quinn and Julie Poitras Santos for leading the Grad Ceramics Seminar that was the catalyst for this project. 2020-ongoing Shapes of Destruction Shapes of Destruction is an ongoing series that uses a hybrid of digital technology and craft techniques to explore the aesthetics of environmental destruction. The works are inspired by deforested areas in the Amazon Rainforest found through Google Earth satellite images, specifically on land that has been historically marked out as Indigenous territory. The shapes are then translated into carpets and soft sculptures using a textile art technique called tufting. As an installation, Shapes of Destruction, re-evaluates and re-presents the human position in ecologies both near and far. Viewers are invited to walk around, sit on, and move the carpets. The installation offers an array of positions for viewers to metaphorically and physically explore their relationship to and perspectives of these shapes. This interactive installation contemplates connections between domesticity and destruction. Each carpet has an attached QR code that can transport viewers to the Google Earth screenshot or satellite view of the coordinates of that specific carpet was made after. Because Google Earth regularly updates their satellite imagery, the carpets may look different to these perpetually changing shapes carved into the rainforest canopy. In themselves, the carpets are an archive of the growth of the environmental destruction taking place today. &nbsp; As the project continues, 3D models, animations, and other materials are being explored to further develop these connections between aesthetics and environmental destruction. This project is in partnership with Amazon Watch. For every carpet sold, 10% will be donated to Amazon Watch. This artistic research project touches on systems of archiving, categorizing, and identifying subjects through the lens of botanic science photography. I spent two days in the Slide Film Photo Archives of the Hausknecht Herbarium and visually recorded what I observed to be the compositions and subjects of botanical photography.The Hausknecht Herbarium is the largest in Europe with over 3.5 million plant specimen.&nbsp; As a former photography student, I am interested in the nuanced differences between scientific botanical photography and decorative botanical photography. The photographers of these slide images were biology scientists or professors studying these landscapes and plants while on school excursions with the university of Jena. As a physical act to understand the composition of these images, I began tracing what I percieved to the subject matter at hand. Is the photograph about the bulb of the flower? The leaf of the plant? The variety of plants on the field or the field itself? Overlapping multiple presumed “subjects” from different slide images, I create an unpredictable composition of botanical specimen based off the footage I found in the archives. These new compositions deconstruct the identity of the subjects at hand, leaving hints of plants, landscapes, and non-human subjects to be seen but not necessarily scientifically understood. The compositions of these drawings are made by my studies of these botanical scientist studies. Just as they perhaps did not know what they would encounter or photograph on these excursions, I also did not know what type of new landscape or botanical compositions I would generate. You will note letters and numbers on the edges and sides of the drawings I made. Those are the same notations that were marked on the slide film that the scientists used to either categorize or archive the footage.&nbsp; As I continued going though the archives it became apparent that most scientists and students on these excursions are male. My visual research turned into an exploration of the male gaze towards plants. I re-presented the drawings and tracings of these slide images as tuftings and wooden sculptures. Below you can see the progress and shapes these drawings have taken. Most of the tufted works are 90 x 60 cm format while the drawings are all most A4 and A5. This is an ongoing project and there is a lot more to unpack. I would select a drawer such as the one above “Cuba 77” and then simply go through every image. Some images were tourist photographs while others were landscapes or plant specimens. I was&nbsp; interested in the images that were scientifically intended. The project originated as an exchange in 2023 during my time at the Kuenstlerische Tatsachen Art &amp; Science Residency in Jena. The works revolves around the chemistry that is contributing to the advancements of synthetic photosynthesis done by Cata Light and University Jena.LINK TO CATA LIGHT AG PENEVA GROUP &nbsp; Synthetic Photosynthesis is a technology that will assist plants in the urgent and essential task cleaning of CO2 out of the Earth’s atmosphere. Systems of water, light, sugars, and chemical compounds are used to research, study, and construct what is needed for synthetic or natural photosynsthesis.&nbsp; The work I created with the help of Catalight and University Jena depicts a deconstruction of ecological systems using man made tools to depict a synthetic environment. The installation "Synthesize Sympathize: A Sphere of Breath and A Detached Disposition" plays with the symbolisms that construct western ideas of paradise, wildness, or Nature. The elements in this installation work together to pull apart functionality in nature-culture today; such as aluminum leaves, grapefruit essential oils, porcelain 3D printed bouldering holds, a Sun Umbrella made of UV light prisms, go-pro flexible trip-pods a dysfunctional crochet hammock.&nbsp; Is “natural” synonymous with human intervention? Humans are a part of nature after all. Every version of technology, from stone age to microplastics, is as much part of the environment as the grass and insects that preexisted human inventions. Yet, human interventions on the land and ecosystem, exploitation of natural resources, and lack of sustainable infrastructures has resulted in desperately needing more human intervention to help repair what damage has been done to the eco-system. When I look at nature-culture today: Vacation destinations, the trends of traveling to spaces to be “one with” Nature along with everyone else who has the same idea, travel influencers, urban planning, Virtical Line cities in the desert, virtual reality... what is a “real” landscape anymore anyways? Think about your front and backyard or the park you go to down the street. Think about National Parks and the cost one must pay to see a landscape that is “untouched”. And on your visit expect traffic jams, drones, selfie sticks, and liter along your path. Think about countries and places that offer beautiful resorts built within impoverished communities where unjust systems profit off the suffering of natives who can not enjoy or use their home due to tourism. Think about the cities and regions that were bombed or pillaged in order to belong to someone else. “Nature”. As long as humans have existed within them, environments have perpetually been curated, constructed, and commodified throughout history.&nbsp; The installation includes a short autobiographical film “A Breath In The World” where spiritualism, science, and a tropical resort come together. The video plays from a damaged iPhone inconspicuously placed in the crochet sculpture. The film uses 3D animations from blender, old found family VHS tapes (specifically a family vacation to Puerto Rico in 1998), and an audio recording from a psychic reading I had in 2011. A younger version of myself can be heard “Daddy there was gum on my foot when I was walking down by the sand” as a crowd of people cram into a natural pool at Catarata la Mina in Puerto Rico.
